CASWELL BUS BARNS
The Caswell Bus Barns was formerly owned by Saskatoon Transit as a space to house and maintain their streetcars dating back to 1913. After moving off this site, Caswell Bus Barns Ltd, purchased this historic building and is repurposing it to be a creative hub supporting creative and community-focused enterprises.
SUSTAINABLE CULTURE
This project beings much needed performance spaces to support local theatre including the Saskatoon Summer Players, Gordon Tootoosis Nikaniwin Theatre, On the Boards Staging company, and community members. This adaptive reuse project makes use of the excellent condition of the existing structure and brings new life to this historically significant heritage building. Additionally, the finishing extensively uses birch plywood due to its abundance, environmental sustainability and local significance.
CANVAS FOR ART + PLACES OF MAGIC
The mainstage is imagined as a multivalent performance space allowing a wide variety of performances to be showcased. Moveable seating wagons bring flexibility to the space and enables creative seating arrangements. The flexible wood flooring grants performers the creative freedom to explore different ways of storytelling and find their voice.
THIRD SPACE
Outside the mainstage is a light filled third space that welcomes the local creative community and encourages the sharing of stories and ideas. The birch finishes celebrate the Paper Birch tree, Saskatchewan’s provincial tree; the circle inscribed on the floor represents the circle of the medicine wheel and the interconnectedness of all things, and the colours within the space represent the colours of Saskatchewan.
